The National Youth Music Theatre require exceptional musicians and amazing young people for backstage. We are producing a full scale production of Howard Goodall and Melvyn Bragg’s THE HIRED MAN, a passionate and earthy piece with a brilliant musical score, and need you to form an integral part of the team. We will be rehearsing residentially and performing at Hull Truck’s brand new £15,000,000 theatre.

We are interested in finding the most talented young musicians in the UK, aged 11 through 21, who have at least a Grade 7 standard and a keen interest in musical theatre. For this project, we are specifically looking for young people who play the violin, viola, cello, double bass, trumpet, piano/keyboard or harp (although if you play another instrument, we’d love to hear from you, too for future projects). The audition (£10) will take an hour. We ask that you prepare two short pieces of contrasting styles, highlighting your technical ability and musicianship, to play for our Musical Director. You will also be asked to sight-read two short pieces and bring your own accompanist, if necessary.

For backstage help, we are looking for young people, aged 16+, who are interested in any or all aspects of technical theatre: stage management, lighting, sound, set design or construction, props, costume/wardrobe, etc. To join us on our 2009 project, an interview (£10) of about 30 minutes is necessary to show us just how wonderful you are! If you have a portfolio of work, please do bring it along.

If selected, for both musicians and technical staff, the cost of the course (28 July – 9 Aug) is £575. This cost includes accommodation and food for your residential stay and the tutoring and experience gained in rehearsal and performance.

All auditions are first come, first served and are subject to numbers. Productions are subject to funding.
