Following the total sell-out of THE
DREAMING at The Tonbridge Arts Festival in October, the
NYMT marches on.
As usual the West End is awash with ex-NYMTers as are the
TV channels and film screens. TOBY JONES, (1981-3), FOLLOWING
HIS RECENTLY ACCLAIMED PERFORMANCE AS William Hogarth on
Channel Four, stars as Truman Capote in the extraordinary
new film THE LIFE OF TRUMAN CAPOTE – THREE TIMES TOLD.
Don’t miss it.
Look out for NOAKO MORI (1990) and GLORIA
ONITIRI (1999-2003) in the new production of AVENUE Q in
the West End in June along with ASHLEY DAY, (1998 -2002)
STUART NEIL (1998–2002)
and ADAM PEARCE (2000-2002) who has just won rave reviews,
at the same time. in EVITA BRAD WEBB (1998-1999) is one
of the featured drummers with the wonderful BLUE MAN GROUP
. WILL KEENE (1987) is enjoying deserved acclaim as T.S.Elliot
in TOM AND VIV at The Alemeida. CHRIS LENNON (1990-1991)
is now in the cast of BILLY ELLIOT which is choreographed
by PETER DARLING (1977). RAE BAKER (1988-1991) IS IN THE
CAST OF THE HUGELY SUCCESSFUL dirty dancing AND Eerry Ellis
(1991) is soon to take over as Elphaba in WICKED at The
Apollo Victoria which also features OLIVER TOMPSETT (1996-1997)
in the cast until he moves into the cast of CHRISTMAS IN
NEW YORK at The Lyric in December.
How wonderful to see JESSICA BROOKS (1998-1999) in the
Donmar company of DON JUAN IN SOHO. CHARLES EDWARDS (1988-1990)
having played alongside Dame Judi Dench in HAY FEVER at
the Haymarket Theatre. During the summer is now filling
the Criterion nightly with a brilliant comedy performance
in THE THIRTY NINE STEPS.
MIKE JIBSON (1996-2001) continues his tour around the world
with The Royal Shakespeare Company in THE CANTERBURY TALES
and SIMON THOMAS (1993-2000) joins the RSC for its exciting
new musical production of THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (also
with Dame Judi Dench!!). Great to see that SHERIDAN SMITH
(1994-2000) is back on the boards in THE LITTLE SHOP OF
HORRORS alongside JASPER BRITTON (the NYMT’s ‘father
of the house – 1976-1977!!) at The Menier Chocolate
Factory.
Following her magnificent production of A NIGHT AT THE
CHINESE OPERA at The Royal Academy of Music, JO DAVIES
(1986 -1999) has been appointed as director of AIDA at
the English National Opera next year - a stupendous achievement
and richly deserved.
Hampton's (Dangerous Liaisons) new adaptation of Chekov's
classic is being directed by Michael Blakemore. It also
stars Kate Burton and MADELEINE WORRAL. (NYMT 1993-1996).
JUDE LAW (1987 -1990) is soon to star in major BBC radio
play about Samuel Beckett. And his two new films, ALL THE
KING’S MEN and BREAKING AND ENTERING are now on release.
How good to see that Jude is the Patron of the new Young
Vic, now beautifully re-designed and re-built – the
theatre where the NYMT played six different productions
in the 70s and 80s.
Lovely to welcome back LILY THOMSON (2001-2002) – an
original Woodlander in THE DREAMING, who just played Sylvia
in the new NYMT production (2006). BEN BARNES (1997-2003)
having finished filming the Russian lead in a new BBC Drama
aptly named THE BIGGER BEN, is now playing the lead in
the national tour of THE HISTORY BOYS which comes into
the West End before Christmas.
JJT is busy having worked on the casting new film from
the Hitchhiker’s Guide team, SON OF RAMBO. And has
just done the same job for the new Tim Burton film of Stephen
Sondheim’s SWEENEY TODD which is to star Johnny Depp
as Sweeney. JO BILLINGTON, having directed a project for
the Central School a project due for a trip to the Minack
Theatre in Cornwall in the summer, was also responsible
for a wonderful new production of Richard Stilgoe’s
BODYWORK with the JASSPA Group in Dulwich in September.
Huge credit is due to ANDY TAYLOR (1989-91) whose new play
CHANGING STATES opens at The Pleasance, London in November.
MATT LUCAS (1987) is currently enjoying huge success with
his Little Britain tour and will be seen as Toad in TOAD
OF TOAD HALL on BBC TV this Christmas. GINA BECK (1998-2001)
now playing a leading role in LES MISERABLES alongside
TIM GODWIN (1991-1995) Congratulations to CHARLES TIGHE
now a member of the National Theatre and playing in The
Life of Galileo at The Royal National Theatre. JAMES BISP
(2000-2003) has just finished appearing nightly at Regent’s
Park while fresh out of GSA, MALINDA PARRIS (1996-2002)
is currently at the National Theatre, in the outstanding
new Tony Kushner musical Caroline Or Change!
CONNIE FISHER, (1998-2000) as the whole world knows, is
playing Maria in THE SOUND OF MUSIC at The London Palladium,
while AMY NUTTALL (1994-1997) AND Steve Elias (1992-1995)
have joined the GUYS AND DOLLS company at The Piccadilly.
TOM CHAMBERS (1990–1995) has just had his contract
in HOLBY CITY extended for another year and CHRISTIAN
COULSON
has been touring the country playing the lead in Festen
(a role created by JONNY LEE MILLER, NYMT 1985-1989).
MADDIE WORRAL (1994-1997) has just opened at Chichester
Festival Theatre in TONIGHT AT EIGHT THIRTY and congratulations
to DOMINIC TIGHE (1996-2003) who has landed a 12 month
contract to tour the world in THE TAMING OF THE SHREW and
TWELTH NIGHT with Edmund Hall’s company PROPELLER.
Congratulations also To CHIKE OKONKWO who has just finished
filming TREASURE ISLAND in Thailand;
