March 19,
2005 Funding threat to youth music From Mr Jude Law and others
Sir, The National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) has a highly
distinguished record of achievement and performance accumulated over
the past 28 years.
In the autumn of 2003, a financial crisis necessitated the temporary
suspension of the company's activities. After thorough researching
and restructuring, the NYMT emerged to continue its fine work with
young people throughout the UK.
As part of that process, early in 2004 the Arts Council of England
commissioned a review and examination of the NYMT. The report
enthusiastically recommended to the Arts Council that a substantial
award be made to the company.
In the past week (report, March 18), after eight months of delay,
the NYMT has heard that the Arts Council has decided not to make the
award, bringing a clear risk of closure.
All of us effectively started our training at the NYMT. We deplore
the decision of the Arts Council. We appeal to organisations and
individuals who wish to see music theatre for young people thrive to
find financial support for this important arts organization. If the
Arts Council cannot see the value of the NYMT's work, we
emphatically do.
Yours sincerely,
JUDE LAW, JAMES BOURNE, LAURA-MICHELLE KELLY, JONNY LEE MILLER, MATT
